What if I am unsure about seeing a therapist? It is natural to feel anxious in a new situation. You may wish to talk with me on the telephone beforehand about any uncertainties you may have. A brief discussion can sometimes be helpful to answer any questions or concerns and to help you decide whether you would like to arrange an initial assessment appointment. How do I arrange to see you? Whichever method that you prefer. Some people call me, others may prefer to email or text me initially. If you call and I am unable to answer immediately please leave me a message with your name and contact number, together with a convenient time for me to return your call. I will then call you back as soon as I’m available.
Where can I see you? I work from comfortable and private therapy rooms in Stafford and Birmingham (Edgbaston). Both locations are discreet with free parking and have disabled access and seperate toilet facilities. Home visits can also be provided if you have difficulty leaving the house. (please see my ‘Fees-Home Visits’ tab)
How often will we need to meet and for how long? The number of appointments varies – from one or two for clarification of an issue to longer more in depth long-term work. Whichever way we work, we will have regular reviews to ensure that we are working in the right direction for you and you have no obligation to remain in therapy any longer than you feel that you need to.
The usual pattern that I have noticed from my clients is that the majority choose to meet weekly for hourly sessions and then once they start feeling more confident in their own abilities they come fortnightly or even once monthly. You may or may not need a lot of sessions.
What does confidentiality mean? … and are there any limits? Confidentiality means not sharing information about people without their knowledge and agreement, and ensuring that all written and electronic information cannot be accessed or read by people who have no reason to see it. Confidentiality is often considered to be what makes therapeutic relationships trustworthy and what enables you to open up without restriction. What you say and what we discuss in the session is private and confidential, unless you were to tell me something that would lead me to believe that you, or someone else, were at risk of serious harm. If this were the case, I may need to disclose this information in line with my professional and legal duty of care. However, wherever possible, I would discuss this with you so that we could decide the best course of action together.
As a professional private practitioner I am required to have monthly supervision with a fellow experienced practitioner. In my supervision, people that I’m working with are addressed anonymously, and the main focus of my discussions regard myself and my own processes. Supervision is in place to strengthen my practice and to be of ultimate benefit for my therapeutic work.
Occasionally it can useful for me to liaise with other health professionals who care for you, for example your GP. however we would always discuss together whether this contact might be helpful for you before any contact was made. If your Solicitor, GP or Healthcare company refers you with a referral letter, it is usually expected that I will send a report to them after your first session and again at the end of therapy. I am happy to discuss the content of these reports with you.
What days and hours do you work? I aim to offer a variety of session times at both of my work locations. In Stafford I generally work on Tuesday mornings, Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday afternoons and evenings. In Birmingham I generally work on Monday afternoons, Monday evenings, Thursday mornings & Thursday afternoons. I don’t work from either location on Fridays or at Weekends.
What can I expect from our first meeting? The first meeting is about getting to know each other. It is usually considered to be an ‘assessment session’. This is a mutual assessment where I will assess your needs and whether I can work with them within therapy, and you will assess my working style and whether you feel comfortable. It is important that you feel safe enough to open up to me and share what it is that concerns you. We may discuss what your goals are from therapy. There is no obligation to book for a next appointment in this session. I respect your entitlement to make your own choices and you are welcome to get back to me when you want.
